Resources for Irish Research

on AmericanAncestors.org

Irish research is often perceived as difficult due to two things: 1) the ruin of Dublin’s Public Record Office (PRO) in 1922, which destroyed the census records of 1821, 1831, 1841, and 1851—essentially the entire demographic record of pre-Famine Ireland, and 2) the commonality of Irish surnames. Despite these hurdles, Irish research is one of genealogy’s most popular topics.

AmericanAncestors.org has many online resources for Irish genealogy and history, including databases that focus on records from Ireland, databases that focus on Irish immigrants to the United States, and other, more specific collections related to the Irish, Irish-Americans, and Ireland.
