Free Download: Researching Irish Ancestors Using American Gravestones, Newspapers, and Specialized Records
Unlike a search for colonial New England ancestors, which can lead to numer-
ous sources of information about many forebears, Irish research has some
inherent hurdles and frustrations. Many people have similar or the same names. Pre-1901 Irish censuses were largely destroyed in a fire, and other records can be scanty. Nevertheless, Irish church and land records, many available online, can offset a number of these hurdles. For Irish Americans, the quest is less about quantity and more about understanding who their ancestors were, locating their places of origin, and discovering what life was like for them.
