Newspapers are an incredibly rich source of genealogical information and have existed in America since the early eighteenth century. The first newspaper published in colonial America appeared in Boston in 1704. It wasn’t until fifteen years later in 1719 that the weekly Boston News-Letter was followed by other papers, the Boston Gazette and Philadelphia’s American Weekly Mercury. Virginia’s first newspaper, the Virginia Gazette, was published in 1736 and by 1740 there were sixteen newspapers in the British colonies, all weeklies. By the time of the American Revolution in 1775, there were some thirty-seven newspapers in business.
